monkeys and crabs and iguanas oh my

we were going to get up at some ungodly early hour this morning but we allowed ourselves to sleep until 7:30 after all. (i don't think i've gotten up earlier than 7:30 in a week). we dawdled over our typical tico breakfast of scrambled eggs, rice and beans, sour cream and some yummy salsa sauce.

we played with clayo (cleo?) the kitten.

by the time we left quepos to drive to manuel antonio it was near 10am.

we hiked around a peninsula. more strenuous than yesterday. the jungle pressed in on either side of us, every now and then a glimpse of the ocean.. no breeze though. just humidity beading on our faces and chests.

we ended at a beach. swam for awhile and fell asleep on the sand for an hour.

now we're on top of the hill that is the drive back to quepos. the internet cafe is our favorite so far.. it rests on the side of the hill and looks over the ocean from high above. vista serena. serene indeed

no monkeys today. yesterday there were about 100 spider or squirrel monkeys above us in the trees. some of them babies. some of them grown. tussling with each other and leaping from tree to tree and chattering and sometimes stopping to laydown on a branch and stare down at us.

then the white faced dark monkeys were larger and they got pretty close to us and sat in branches eating fruit and seemed fearless

and the iguanas are like squirrels in a park at home. they just wander across the trail at all times. they let you get within a foot of them. they are spiney and huge and waddle funnylike when you get too close.

and manuel antonio has a crab problem. red legged crabs, hermit crabs, the beaches are alive with them. the hillsides are thronged with the red legged crabs.

i have a watch line for the first time in years. i am getting a tan. i didn't know it was even possible.

we are heading back to quepos. for ceviche and cerveza...our nightly meal.

and tomorrow we head off to some other part of costa rica. .. we have 3 days before our plan is to be in arenal , where the live volcano is. and the hot springs. we want to end our trip at the hot springs.

friday back to san jose to our friendly buccaneer hostel and saturday morning really damn early we'll be on a plane for home.

i wish it were more humid in california. i am remembering how much i don't really like dry heat.

i prefer this warm cozy wetness.

i like the tropics.

and have i mentioned how much i like monkeys?

i hope i see a sloth before i leave costa rica.
