vermont

the air conditioning is fixed at work and i'm kind of sad. i liked it all warm and humid and languid like yesterday. wearing jeans and a tank top and bare feet, feeling like summer.

it's really hot outside though still. i was walking around at lunch and it smelled like summer downtown. you know. it's the same in any city, you pass stores and you can smell the smell of air conditioning wafting out onto the shimmering street. a little scent of cold fake air that buffets against the warm until the warm wins out. it smells like warm concrete, air conditioning, sun tan ltion, melting sneakers, and warm people. and a little bit like gasoline and food.

throbbing thriving hiving city.

and at times like this, i miss the east coast. where this is accompanied by humidity and fresh cut grass smells. where it smells a little more like flowers and green and wet and sun and sweat (the good kind) and bees and birds and fresh water lakes and chlorine pools and as night falls it stays shimmering warm around you on a porch somewhere, swatting mosquitos away from your legs and drinking something cold and watching fireflies.

i love san francisco. and a little piece of vermont lives in my sternum at all times...emitting little lapping waves around my insides that sometimes make me feel just a little nostalgic and a little lost.

a&w root beer, watermelon chins, mild cow smell everywhere, things growing faster than you can cut them back, earthworms and sweet waterdirt smell of the lake, blackberries and blueberries and strawberries, grandmas roses, and the vague smell of hot tar as the shingles on the roof get hot under our feet during hide and go seek.
