bbq weekends

a second fabulous weekend in a row. first tahoe and then ....somewhere along the middle of the week, the idea of sitting around doing my normal thing on the weekend just sounded ...wrong.

so i decided to organize a barbecue in golden gate park..last minute...and hope all the people i care about could make it. I rented a table/bbq pit in a large meadow. i checked weather.com and was promised 72 degrees.

friday night, i went over and ate food at a&a's house and had great conversation with them and their friends cara and steve (and now my friends, i suppose, as well). then! a note had been left on my door that my other favorite girl was in town. two of the most important women in my life are iota and ariel. and i'd just been thinking how much i miss ariel, and she was in town. she came over at round midnight and we talked for a few hours (i think i spent most of the time just sitting, leaning against her, soaking up her presence).

i woke up in the morning. got a roommate. and a good one at that. and then ari and i went shopping for the chips and the beers and the ribs in bbq sauce and chicken and frisbees and water guns and charcoal and macaroni salad. ari had slaved over the most amazing potato salad and his own asian style ribs with soy sauce and ginger and other assorted tasty things.

we got to the park and three people were already waiting. and the fog was waiting. (san francisco is so damn finicky). we started up the grill and over the next few hours people steadily trickled in (including ariel. the more i get the better) til there were 15 - 20 of us getting sticky rib faces and filling up on potato salad and grilled asparagus and portobellos.

somebody brought a croquet set and what started as a demure game of croquet turned into people on bikes playing polo-rambo-croquet. in the dense fog. it was beautiful.

the boxed wine was nasty so it ended up in the water guns, and a wine battle was begun.

the other half of the city was still 70something degrees, but in our foggy half we were bundled up and shivering around the bbq and then tree climbing and forest traipsing commenced. we finally called it a day. wandered back to the neighborhood pub. continued to drink .ended up creating a house party at a&a's and dancing until 3am.

and today ...after sleeping in. here i am. at work. eating a fancy sandwich and listening to music.

ariel knew me before. during. and after. many people knew me before and then lost touch and still know me. many people met me during. and are tstill around. but very few were there before. *and* during. and continued on into after.

happy easter.

already planning an oyster excursion. with bbq'd oysters, oysters on the half shell and cold beers.
