birthday weekend.

my birthday weekend.

by heather mcmurphy

friday night i went out to my favorite korean bbq restaurant with about 10 or so of my closer friends. (some couldn't make it. you were missed!) we gorged on eel and bulgogi and we had three long large tables and you couldn't see the tables because they were COVERED with little dishes of kimchee, seaweed salad, gelatinous stuff in weird sauces, little ANCHOVIE FISHIES THAT BARELY CRUNCH IN YOUR TEETH! (love them), this. taht. god, the sides are what makes korean SO GOOD. and we had tripe. EW. matt's idea. he likes that exotic stuff. and we had tofu bubbling stew (on the house) and a few platters of fish (on the house) and giant sapporos. i was a tong-nazi and grilled to my hearts content. passing around platters of still sizzling meat fresh off the grill for everyone to nibble on. then we walked to a nearby bar with a back patio and drank beer and talked and danced 1 or 2 and head to our respective homes.

saturday my mom showed up around 2 and we ate bagels and strawberries in my kitchen. got in her little midlifecrisis miata, put the top down, and drove up highway 1 to sebastapol. after a fabulous dinner, we were in our beds by 7:30 cackling and watching movies on the tv in our hotel.

we woke up in the morning, went to a bakery where they were making the bread right in front of us. (we bought two loves of brie/apple/olive bread! so good!) and got our coffee.

i have pictures of Osmosis (the spa) . but basically it consisted of sitting in wood mulch that ferments around you , and is thus very HOT. i was steaming. oh, and yes. i said wood mulch. don't you love california!? before the wood mulch, you drink enzyme tea in a little japanese tea garden that is your own. y our private little garden. (i will post pictures!). so you spend 1/2 hour in the wood mulch. then get out and dust yourself off outside with a little broom. (because you're covered in bsically what amounts to SAWDUST). then you shower. then you head out to the pagoda by the stream, where you get a 75 minute massage. ..

heaven!

but somehow, even more heavenly. ...driving afterwards, out to the coast. .. to point reyes, where we ate bbq'd oysters , still bubbling in their shells...simmering in garlic butter and brownsugar bbq sauce. sipping from cold bottles of beer. then having hog island shuck fresh oysters they'd just caught for us and dousing htem in lime and tabasco and slurping them down.

driving with the top down , through redwoods, past marshes, past the ocean.

fuzzy and i almost rented an apartment (ok, we went and looked and thought about it) at hog island, 4 years ago. 5 years ago? i don't remember. back when we daydreamed we were forever and happy and were going to live in the country with a herd of happy housetrained bunnies.

now hog island has a picnic area where you bring your own bottled beer and wine and side foods and they provide the oysters and bbq's.

i want to go back

it was a good birthday.

here are the pictures. click here!

the lovely woman (the one that isn't me!) is my mother. the garden is our private tea garden. please note the spiderweb! and see if you can see the hummingbird taking a bath in two of the pictures! and the oysters at the end, me still really red and wearing kerchief after the hot wood mulch. so i made myself black and white. ha. (it takes me hours before the redness leaves when i've been in one of those super hot things. the curse of the super-fair)
